What Is Mention Rate?
Mention rate shows how often your brand is mentioned in AI-generated answers across a tracked set of prompts. It is one of the core metrics in your AI Visibility Report. If Axy tracks 100 prompts and your brand appears in 20 of the AI-generated answers, your mention rate is 20%.

Why mention rate matters
Mention rate helps you understand whether AI systems associate your brand with your category, use cases, and buyer questions.
A higher mention rate suggests that your brand is more likely to appear when users ask AI systems about your market.
A low mention rate may mean AI systems do not yet have enough signals connecting your brand to the topics you want to own.
What counts as a mention?
A mention happens when an AI answer includes your brand name, product name, or company name.
For example, if the prompt is:
Best AI marketing platforms for startups
And the AI answer includes Axy in the response, that counts as a mention.
Mentions can happen with or without citations.
That is why mention rate and citation rate should be read together.
Mention rate vs citation rate
Mention rate tells you whether your brand appears in the answer.
Citation rate tells you whether your website is used as a source.
A brand can be mentioned without being cited.
For example, AI may list your brand in a recommendation but cite a third-party article, directory, or review site instead of your own website.
Both metrics matter.
Mention rate shows brand presence. Citation rate shows source authority.
How Axy measures mention rate
Axy generates 89–100 prompts per brand based on your strategy, competitors, search trends, and funnel stage.
Then it measures whether your brand is mentioned across AI systems such as:
- ChatGPT
- Gemini
- Perplexity
- Claude
Axy also compares your mention rate against competitors so you can understand your relative visibility.
Why mention rate may be low
Your mention rate may be low if:
- Your brand is new
- Your site does not clearly explain your category
- You lack content for high-intent prompts
- Competitors have stronger topic coverage
- Third-party sources do not mention your brand
- AI systems do not associate your brand with the category yet
- Your product pages, use-case pages, or comparison pages are missing
Low mention rate is not failure. It is a baseline for improvement.
How to improve mention rate
To improve mention rate, create content that strengthens your association with the prompts you want to appear for.
This may include:
- GEO articles
- Use-case pages
- Comparison pages
- FAQ sections
- Product explainers
- Case studies
- Tutorials
- Third-party mentions
- Internal linking improvements
Axy helps turn missing prompts into proposed campaign briefs.
Best practices
Focus on relevant mentions
It is better to be mentioned in high-intent prompts than broad, irrelevant prompts.
Compare against competitors
Competitor mention rate shows whether others are owning the category conversation.
Use missing prompts as campaign opportunities
Prompts where your brand is missing can become GEO articles, comparison pages, or social campaigns.
Track monthly
Mention rate is measured monthly, so look for trends over time instead of reacting to one report.
